Have you ever stopped to think about how an elevator works?
It doesn’t ask you to climb each floor one step at a time. The moment you step inside, it lifts everyone together. In many ways, our relationships work the same way.
The people we surround ourselves with have a powerful influence on the direction our lives take. Some individuals encourage us to think bigger, take chances, and believe in ourselves when our confidence fades. Others, often without realizing it, reinforce hesitation, fear, and the belief that our goals are out of reach.
The influence isn’t always obvious. It rarely comes from one dramatic conversation. More often, it’s built through everyday interactions, the opinions we hear repeatedly, the attitudes we absorb, and the expectations that quietly shape our mindset.
Look at the journeys of successful entrepreneurs, artists, and leaders. While their achievements may seem personal, very few reached them entirely on their own. Behind many success stories are mentors, supportive friends, thoughtful colleagues, or family members who challenged them to grow, offered encouragement during setbacks, or created opportunities that changed the course of their lives.
This is what I like to call the Elevator Effect.
The right people don’t achieve your dreams for you. They simply create an environment where you feel confident enough to aim higher, work harder, and discover strengths you may never have recognized on your own.
So perhaps success isn’t determined only by the effort you put in. It’s also influenced by the company you keep.
Because as you continue your journey upward, it’s worth asking yourself: Who is standing beside you in the elevator?
