There have been so many times when I’ve walked into a room and not known a single person.
You look around. People are already talking. Some seem to know each other really well. You wonder who to walk up to without making it awkward.
And then someone smiles at you.
It sounds like such a small thing. It is. But somehow, it makes a difference.
A smile can say, “Come join us.”
I’ve noticed this at networking events, meetings, social gatherings, even in everyday situations. We often wait for someone to introduce us or give us a reason to start a conversation. But sometimes, all it takes is a smile and a simple hello.
We underestimate these little gestures because they don’t feel important in the moment.
But think about the last time someone smiled at you when you were having a difficult day. Or when you were new somewhere. Or when you were simply feeling a little out of place.
You probably remember it.
That’s the thing about people. We may forget what someone was wearing or exactly what they said, but we remember how they made us feel.
And this matters even more when we are building relationships.
At Infiniti Connects, we talk a lot about connections. Business, collaborations, referrals and opportunities are all important. But before any of those things happen, there is a person standing in front of you.
Talk to them.
Smile at them.
Ask them how their day is going.
You don’t always need a perfect introduction or an impressive pitch. Sometimes, you just need to make the first move.
I’ve also realised that a smile is one of the easiest ways to break down that invisible wall between strangers. You don’t need confidence to do it. You don’t need to know what to say next. Just smile.
Maybe that person will smile back.
Maybe you’ll end up having a five-minute conversation.
Maybe you’ll discover that you have something in common.
And maybe, months from now, you’ll look back and realise that a relationship, a friendship or even a business opportunity started with something as ordinary as a smile.
So, the next time you walk into a room, don’t wait for someone else to make you feel welcome.
Be that person.
Smile first.
You never know how far it might go.
