I love baking. But if I spent every waking hour in the kitchen, I’d probably start seeing cupcakes in my dreams.

For me, sports have always been a good way to switch off. Cricket has been a favourite for years, and recently, I’ve discovered pickleball.

There’s something refreshing about stepping away from the kitchen, putting down the spatula and picking up a bat or paddle instead.

Baking can be physically tiring, but it doesn’t always mean you’re getting enough movement. You can spend hours standing, mixing, decorating and packing orders, then realise you haven't actually done much for yourself.

Sports give me that break.

They get me moving, but more importantly, they give my mind somewhere else to go for a while. No orders to check. No recipe to fix. No cake waiting to be decorated.

Just the game.

I also think there is something about playing sports that keeps you humble. You can be good at your work and still miss an easy shot. You can have a great day and then have a terrible game the next day.

You keep playing.

Running The Bittersweet Palate has taught me that work is important, but it can't be the only thing in life.

So between cakes, cheesecakes and orders, I try to make time for my other love too.

A little cricket. A little pickleball.

And a much happier baker.
